I’ve been working on a university clearing hotline all week, trying to help young people find a place at university if their A Level results let them down. I feel for these teenagers, as it’s challenging to stay positive and motivated when your hard work hasn’t paid off. As a firm believer in the power of education, I will always encourage people, especially young women, to stay in education and work toward a degree.

Vicky Beeching: Out and Proud

Vicky Beeching has stolen the spotlight this week by making the brave decision to come out as a lesbian. A few days ago, the theologian, religious commentator, broadcaster and musician became an inspiration for two groups of people who have, historically at least, been on conflicting sides of the equality argument – religious people, and LGBTs. Vicky Beeching unites these demographics and, I have to say, she does it with absolute grace.

Kellie Maloney: We’re Not All In This Together

Boxing promoter, manager of Lennox Lewis and former UKIP candidate Kellie Maloney has surprised the LGBT community this week by speaking out against same-sex couples raising children. Now, if you haven’t heard about Kellie’s story, this homophobia likely won’t come as too much of a shock – she was running for UKIP after all. The thing is, we expect this kind of thing from people outside of the queer community, but it feels so different, so much harsher, when it comes from someone who openly identifies as LGBT.

Talk Nerdy To Me: Star Trek Writer Responds Fabulously to Homophobe
Star Trek is known for its involvement of diverse characters in storylines, and though I’ve never gotten into the show (despite constant urges from my flatmate), I have a lot of respect for any writer who makes a conscious effort to represent minority groups in their work.
