RIP Robin Williams
Robin Williams is quoted as saying: ‘In America, they really do mythologise people when they die’, so to avoid the risk of doing so, I’ll keep this short.
Williams was an incredible friend to the LGBT community, an ally in every way, and a talented, hilarious person. Cast into such a variety of roles, Robin Williams always captivated the audience, brought us to tears and burst us into laughter. He had a particular talent for portraying queer characters, depicting them in an animated and witty way, with a beautiful charm.
His death is an absolute tragedy, and as Russell Brand so accurately put it: ‘There must be something wrong with the world if the world can’t accommodate Robin Williams.’
You will be missed.
LGBT people face a higher risk of mental illness and suicide than our heterosexual cis-gendered counterparts. For anybody struggling, of if you are concerned about a friend or family member, please contact Samaritans or Mind.
