From the Lesbian Side

A weekly round of some of the top LGBT stories from across the globe
Facebook Faux-pas
I’m sure all of you will agree with me that this is a very unassuming, inoffensive image and may I say a pretty one at that.
Unfortunately Facebook did not seem to agree, deeming the image broke rules regarding “nudity and pornography”.
This got me scratching my head, because to my knowledge such films as ‘Kyss Mig’ and ‘Bound’ were not located in the porn section of my local HMV. Both of which included some beautifully portrayed sex scenes.
However when Italian Carlotta Trevisian, a straight 28 year old mother and LGBT supporter, posted this photo to her profile, which may I add is a google image stock photo, Facebook asked her to immediately remove the image stating the above breaches of its rules.
When she refused Facebook suspended her account, stating she had violated the community’s standards.
Ms Trevisan asked “What was the harm with this photo, especially when so many like this can be found on Google? How can one photo provoke such sensitivity?” She was referring to the fact that not only was the image reported to Facebook, she also received a tirade of abusive and homophobic comments.
In a slight upturn to the story, Ms Trevisan’s profile was reinstated and Facebook has admitted it made a mistake, a small yet sobering condolence.
She immediately set the photo as her profile picture, proving that the LGBT community has some amazing straight allies out there.
Now on a lighter note I thought I would tell you about a new film that was recently brought to my attention…
2. If you ever watched ‘Bring it On’ and thought, “This film could use more zombies and lesbian witches”

I know what you’re thinking, and you would be partly right you only have to look at the poster to see this has all the makings of your standard B horror movie (mass amounts of fake blood, ambiguous nudity).
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one disappointed by Jennifer’s Body, only this film isn’t relying on that ONE lesbian kiss. In fact it isn’t really being advertised as a queer film at all, which is the greatest thing about this film as it is undeniably super gay.
So if you liked Jenifer’s body but wanted a bit more girl on girl action, or you loved the movie Bitch Slap this is right up your street.
All Cheerleaders Die is available on VOD, USA in selected cinemas June 13, UK no release date set.
Now for some news from across the pond, we were all jubilant to hear that same sex marriage was to be recognised in England and Wales in March. However the US has not fared so well in its saga of same-sex marriage.
3. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Ain’t No State Unchallenged

The US currently has 29 states with legal challenges against same-sex marriage bans, 19 states and the District of Columbia allow marriage between same-sex couples.
On Monday five Lesbian and Gay couples in Alaska filed a lawsuit challenging the states ban on same-sex marriage, then Thursday four couples in the state of Montana filed a lawsuit of their own.
Only two sates remain with unchallenged bans, and the number could possibly fall to one as it is believed a lawsuit is soon set to be filed in the state of South Dakota.
Nancy Robrahn, 68, and Jennie Rosenkranz, 72, who have been together for a heart melting 27 years plan to marry in the state of Minnesota before returning to South Dakota to challenge the same-sex marriage ban.
North Dakota remains the only state with an unchallenged same-sex marriage ban, here’s hoping it doesn’t remain that way for too long.
In slightly happier news couples in Arkansas and Pennsylvania have rushed to obtain their marriage licenses, with most couples celebrating with weddings.
The ‘powers that be’ in America have started very slowly to see sense, with several US District judges having ruled the ban as unconstitutional.
I can see this fracas between supporters for and against continuing on and on and on, it’s a shame the US government don’t put as much energy into more worthy fights, such as gun crime.
4. Lesbian Licking Cornetto Advert
Well it’s not quite as graphic as that! Cornetto have created a lesbian and lengthy advert about a love story. Now this all sounds very exciting and the story is beautifully told and even made me cry (a bit)! However, I am always a bit dubious when a big media campaign like this comes up. Like do they really know about us lesbians or do they just want us to buy Cornettos and think about lesbians? Still I haven’t yet seen it on TV, so maybe it is just to get people talking about the brand.
Anyway I would definitely recommend watching it, even just to check out the hot tennis player. She can knock me out anytime...
5. And Finally…
It’s nearly the summer and that means GAY PRIDE SEASON – obviously that also means lots of rain if you voted UKIP (and if you did I’m not your friend).
This weekend all the fun has already been happening in the UK’s biggest Pride in Birmingham and us lobsters ladies have been enjoying every minute.
Check out Nighttours a website that I found which has the full lowdown of all the best prides around the world.
I hope you enjoyed the first news round up as much as I enjoyed writing it, now if you’ll excuse me I have a chilled glass of Espresso Martini calling my name..
