The World’s First Lesbian Penguins: Exclusive Interview with Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel
The only lesbian animals in the world have been discovered in an Israeli zoo. Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel have nurtured the lesbian relationship between Suki and Chupchikoni, two female Jackass penguins.

Yes many of you will have heard about the news of the lesbian penguins in Israel. We were genuinely excited, intrigued and smitten with this news, that we have taken it further and spoken to the zoo ourselves about what this news has potentially meant for them, the ‘girls’ and the gay community at large. Same-sex relationships have always been prevalent in the animal kingdom and now with this further scientific proof it shows that homosexuality is not a choice, but a result of natural forces that cannot and must not be redirected.
Pink Lobster Dating's Miriam Hammer spoke to Sagit Horowitz (Safari spokesperson) about the world’s first detected lesbian penguins:
(translated from Hebrew into English)
How has the story of Suki and Chupchikoni, the world’s only lesbian penguins affected the safari?
It brought a huge smile on everybody’s face and a great deal of genuine excitement.
How did you discover that these two penguins were girls?
You can’t tell the difference between male and female penguins just by looking at them without doing a blood test.
A student was conducting research on avian malaria and in the results the sex of the birds was discovered.
The girl penguins displayed various signs of courtship including nesting, kissing, caressing and the desire to be together even though there were plenty of male penguins available!
Do you think this will make a difference regarding the acceptance of lesbians in our society around the world?
We here in the zoo are by nature not discriminating people. We are open minded, naturalists, from the animal world and we see relationships openly and without judgement. It would be wonderful if this non-judgmental approach could be mirrored by society in general as a result of this story.
Are you aware of any other officially reported cases of homosexual animals?
This is the first case that we know about two lesbian birds. We have information about gay males in Germany, which are two male gay birds.
But there are no recorded cases anywhere in the world of lesbian animals who have found one another.
Have the lesbian penguins displayed any motherly instincts yet? And are you planning any artificial insemination with the two lovebirds?
They are still very young and they are just in the courting stage of their lives. We are not going to rush anything and would like to let them just get on with it and we will similarly enjoy following their journey.
In the future, there is always the option for them to fulfil their motherhood. Penguins normally have two eggs and in the majority of the time only one is nurtured. There could therefore be the opportunity to take the unused egg from another ‘heterosexual’ penguin couple. They would then have a donated egg that they could indeed mother as their own.
How do you wish this story to inspire others?
We are delighted to spread this happy story of lesbian penguin love to the world.
