Lesbian Mayor’s Daughter Denied Driving Test
Houston recently impressed gay people across the world following the election of Lesbian Mayor, Annise Parker. That was until the news this week that just put the state right back down in my estimation, when Parker’s daughter was denied a driving test due to having two moms.
Although same-sex adoption is allowed in Texas, birth certificates cannot identify two same-sex parents.
The DPS (Department of Public Safety) did change their mind in the end to allow the driving test. According to the DPS Parker’s sexuality has nothing to do with the refusal and was due to a lack of sufficient documentation. However the Mayor reiterated that they were informed that her daughter could only have one mom on her birth certificate and that this was indeed the reason. Some may believe that this was an opportunity to rant about gay issues, but Parker has not been one to focus on LGBT inequalities.
Whoever is telling the truth, this case has highlighted the discrepancies in the system with regards equality for same-sex couples. You cannot allow one aspect of equal rights then consequently deny another.
Houston clearly has a problem.
