Lesbian and Gay Love in Action
In last week’s news a lesbian couple were told off for kissing in a Brighton Sainsbury’s. Normally in this situation people complain and rant about the homophobic action that took place across any medium possible. However, this time the frustration and anger about how this couple were treated took a rather different turn and “the Big Kiss-In” was staged.
This may be because students were behind it and students love an opportunity to get together and create controversy. For whatever reason it happened, it did happen and with an amazing turn out with hundreds getting involved.
Hands up if you were there or wished you were there! I was there in spirit.
What I would like to know is why there seems to be so many complaints coming forward about both lesbian and gay couples showing affection. Just today Jack James and his partner were thrown off a bus in London. It got me thinking is it a gay and lesbian thing or is it just an “I don’t want to see lots of smooching in public and get a room kind of thing”. The number of times that I see heterosexual couples properly making out and think “ew” is a regular occurrence. But then again I don’t say anything to them and just look away.
It appears, based on the media coverage, that public shows of affection are on the rise for gay and lesbian couples. This could be because the community feel more comfortable in the UK since we have had equal marriage. If this is the case then it’s a powerful and wonderful act that two lesbians and two men feel confident enough to kiss in public. And unlike heterosexuals who have not had to think twice about it in our modern age, showing affection in a public place means more to us.
So I say if they can do it why can’t we?… Either we all get a room or we are one big open room!
