National Coming Out Day around the world
October 11th was National Coming Out Day, which evidently is the one official day that we can do it!
In reality it is, of course, not the only day that we can come out. It’s an opportunity for a discussion about the LGBT community in order to heighten awareness about potential struggles.
For many the day may be a reminder of when they came out. Or it may be the time that many decide to take that big brave move. Whatever it means to you it is a wonderful celebration for us all.
Or is it? What if you don’t want to come out? Perhaps you don’t need to make a big deal about it and just happen to be gay or lesbian. Maybe everyone else has already told you and it doesn’t need to be said.
Still although Coming Out for many is pretty easy, I think National Coming Out Day for me was a day to reflect on those around the world. Yes it was easy for me, and in the UK and a growing number of states in the US it is becoming increasingly less taboo. Nonetheless, for many in other countries coming out could mean family abandonment, brutality and even death.
It saddens me to think how many people would love to come out but cannot do so due to a genuine fear. So whilst you may choose to come out or to stay in the closet just remember at least you have a choice!
If you’re still toying with the decision James Dawson’s “This Book is Gay” is a terrific insight to help you on your way.
