Live well at Sainsbury’s unless you’re a lesbian
They tell you that you can “Live well for less” at Sainsbury’s, but they don’t tell you that only stands if you’re heterosexual. This week a lesbian couple were told by a security guard to stop kissing whilst in the supermarket. What makes this story even more ridiculous was that they were in Brighton store, the UK’s gay capital! According to Annabelle Paige, one of the girls, she only gave her girlfriend a “light” kiss before being told off and threatened with having to stop or leave.
Sainsbury’s has apologised, whilst masking it with a range of excuses including that the security guard was a third party employee. Plus rather than just covering up, by offering to put money to a charity of their choice, they should be running a better training programme for their staff. There are still big companies around the world who are in the press, such as KFC, for treating LGBT customers inappropriately. Does this not prove that staff need to learn how to respect ALL their customers? Companies can’t just play the blame game; they need to take responsibility with a full educational programme.
The irony of this complaint was that it happened on National Coming Out Day and shows just how much we still need a day like this one.
