Ha-ha, baker closes after refusing lesbian couple
A huge grin is across my face as I hear about the closing of a business that really did deserve it. I am always the first to be upset about a local company who has ceased to trade due to lack of business, and always like to support my butcher, baker and candlestick maker in the neighborhood. However, this news is definite justice.
Remember the bakery Sweet Cakes run by Melissa and Aaron Klein from Gresham, Oregon? They refused to bake a wedding cake for lesbians Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman last year. After the state said the couple had a strong case against the company for the discrimination, by breaking the law by refusing service, Sweet Cakes came under fire from the couple with a $150,000 lawsuit. The bakery could no longer trade due to the backlash and cost of the prosecution, and has closed its doors.
Another win for the LGBT community and hopefully other businesses will pay heed to this case and ensure they do not discriminate against anyone of on the basis of age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, marital status, or socioeconomic status.
