Protest against Lesbian Families in France
A horrible march took place in Paris with over 70,000 demonstrators. With all the progress with equal marriage in France, this protest against IVF and surrogacy was a huge step backwards.
Yes we are aware that acceptance towards equal marriage in France has been far from positive since its legalisation. Nonetheless a march like this is none other than blatant homophobia.
The group who organised this march - "Manif pour Tous" ("Protest for Everyone") were actually behind a march last year against same-sex adoption. The core people included Catholics and conservatives.
Some may say that this was not just against gay people rather against IVF and surrogacy as a whole. Still many proclaimed that families are about having a mother and a father and therefore the message was loud and clear.
What is particularly ironic here is that the march was supposedly about guarding “family values”. Perhaps someone should tell them the definition. I know many wonderful families that are not made up of a mother and a father and research has shown that they are often more content.
Surrogacy is still illegal in France.
