Lesbian Couple Marry after 72 years together
This was a moment when I would challenge any lesbian not to cry. The marriage of Vivian Boyack and Alice Dubes, aged 91 and 90, took place on Saturday 6th September in Iowa.
Not only was this wedding a true triumph of the longevity of love, it also rang as a reminder of where we have come. The couple got together in 1947 and would have faced decades of discrimination. Unlike most “straight” couples of their time, their relationship would have encountered numerous obstacles in a long term partnership. More importantly, they have not been able to marry until now.
Still this has not stopped them from living a full and exciting life together. They have travelled across America and beyond.
The Reverend of the proceedings, Linda Hunsaker movingly announced:
“This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago.”
The couple said that they had a good time and reiterated that 7 decades together takes love and commitment.
