Jennifer Lawrence and the right to privacy
As I am sure we’ve all heard, a cyber hacker and sex offender violated Jennifer Lawrence’s right to privacy last week. She had nude photographs of herself saved on her computer and the criminal hacked in and spread them around the Internet, obviously illegally, and worse – without permission.
This is a serious crime, and, in my eyes at least, I think all those who view the images contribute to the horribleness of this cruel, cruel act. The more people who click on the pictures, the worse her torment becomes, and as women we should be standing in solidarity, not jeering at an image of a naked woman as if it exists purely for consumption.
Jennifer Lawrence can take naked photographs if she wishes too, and by doing so she is in no way encouraging them to be on the Internet. Those who use this ‘argument’ sound similar in intelligence and moral fibre to those who say ‘well, she was wearing a short skirt, she was asking for it, wasn’t she?’
Lawrence is a successful actress and role model for women, so, out of respect and in the name of feminism – don’t give in to the sexism of the media and stand with Jennifer instead.
