Public proposals show pride
Martina Navratilova proposed to her long-term girlfriend during a tennis match at the US Open this week, and the two now plan to wed in their home state of Florida. Equal marriage is currently illegal in the state, but a federal judge recently struck down the constitutional ban, and there should be an update by next year.
Now, I’ve never been a fan of proposals – I don’t even like the idea of marriage – but there’s something that I really respect about public same-sex proposals.
Asking someone to marry you must be terrifying, and to do it in front of so many people even more so. But by proposing to your same-sex partner in such a bold and brilliant way, it’s the ultimate expression of pride. It says ‘I don’t care what you think of me, or my relationship, and I’m going to be with this person for the rest of my life’.
Good luck to the both of them.
