LGreenBT: A Gay Vote for the Greens
The Green Party is the only main party that is led by a woman - the diligent Natalie Bennett. Deemed to be the biggest threat to Labour, they are currently part of the fourth largest group in the European Parliament, which is bigger than both the Conservative and UKIP Parties.
They state that their policies promote 'ecological sustainability, a fairer, more stable economy, and a more equal society'. They believe in 'social justice on a global level', suggesting that they are pro-EU. However, the party is highly critical of the way the European Union is currently run, and plans to call for a referendum concerning our membership.
LGBTIQ Greens, a sub-section of the Green Party, offers a great deal of information on Green plans for LGBT people. Naturally, they support equal marriage rights, and state that LGBT equality is at stake in the upcoming elections. Our liberation is so important to this party that they believe EU membership should be on condition of each individual country's policies for LGBT people. This means that the Green Party believes EU membership should be exclusive to countries who grant equal rights to their gay, bisexual and trans citizens.
The Green Party want a set minimum of rights for LGBT people to be secured via legislation in the European Parliament. The Party has already approached this issue through MEP Ulrike Lunacek, who submitted a landmark report to the European Parliament. The Parliament backed the report, which encourages a common approach to tackling homophobia and transphobia in the EU.
The Green Party are growing in popularity, with increasingly frustrated citizens turning to this left-wing party for an alternative. To support the fight against austerity, welfare cuts and privatisation, and to help drive the transition from fossil fuels to a sustainable world that sees all of their citizens as equal, vote Green.
